Notes |
- BR1A3C1 (NO LISTING) Everett Clifford Appelgate, b. December 1899 in NY (NY, Kings Co., Brooklyn, Ward 23, 2/398, Sheet 10B, 162/209 [December 1899, birthplace NY]; 1905 NY State Census, Kings Co., Brooklyn Bor., ED 28, AD 4, Block B, p. 10 [age 5]), d. 16 July 1936 in Ossining, Westchester Co., NY (Sing Sing), where he was executed for the murder of his wife. He married in 1920, Ada D. Johnson, b. Aug. 1899, d. 27 Sep. 1935 in Nassau Co., NY, of arsenic poisoning. Everett was convicted of her murder.
Sometime prior to 1920, Everett moved to Baldwin, Nassau Co., NY with his parents. In his grandfather Joseph Henry’s probate file, his father Harry Clifford is identified as living in Baldwin, Nassau Co., NY.
He was still living there in 1934. In that year, Everett, his wife Ada, and their daughter Agnes moved out of Ada’s parents’ home into the house of Everett’s American Legion buggy, John Creighton. Also living in the house were Creighton’s wife Frances, daughter Ruth, and son Jack. (Mark Gado, Death Row Women: Murder, Justice, and the New York Press (2008), p. 98).
Everett soon began having sexual intercourse with Ruth Creighton, age 15 or 16 (reports of her age differ). He also slept with Frances Creighton. Frances Creighton began giving doses of arsenic to Ada Appelgate. Frances had probably previously poisoned her mother-in-law and brother in 1923. (Id. at 101). She was convicted of the murder of Ada, but her testimony also implicated Everett, who was also convicted.
In Death Row Women, Gaddo refers to testimony at trial by Everett’s “Uncle Joseph” from New Jersey. This is Joseph Henry 5D4C7A3G.
