    • PR1D Lewis F Applegate, b. 29 May 1840 in Herkimer Co., NY (1850 US Census, NY, Herkimer Co., German Flats, 395/423 [age 10, birthplace NY]; 1855 NY State Census, Herkimer Co., Litchfield, 165/173 [age 12, birthplace Herkimer Co. NY]; 1860 US Census, NY, Herkimer Co., German Flatts, p. 36, 284/288 [age 20, birthplace NY]; 1870 US Census, NY, New York Co., New York City, Ward 22, ED 17, p. 74, 202/46 [age 30, birthplace NY]); d. 4 Dec 1870 in New York City, NY. He married on 2 June 1868 in New York City, Matilda Ross b. abt. 1840 in NY (1870 US Census, supra) d. _____.

Lewis, while he only lived thirty years, left an impressive paper trail.

Lewis was enumerated with his parents in German Flatts, Herkimer Co., NY in 1850. He was ten years old and born in NY. (1850 US Census, supra). Then he was enumerated with them in the 1855 NY State Census. (1855 NY State Census, supra). In 1860, after the apparent death of his father William, he was enumerated with his mother Elizabeth and two younger siblings, Melvin and Mary. (1860 US Census, supra). He was a “pedder” [peddler?], age 20, born in NY.

In 1861, Lewis joined the 102d New York Volunteers as a medical cadet. He re-enlisted in 1863 as an assistant surgeon. On 21 July 1863, he was captured outside of Gettysburg and later confined at Libby Prison in Richmond, VA. (New York Times, November 6, 1863, [no page number]).

Lewis must have been released sometime later in 1863 because he was home in Herkimer County to purchase a lot from his mother on 5 December 1863. (Herkimer Co. (NY) Deeds 82-478). According the very brief biography in the list of graduates of Columbia College where he went to medical school, he was the Assistant Surgeon in Chard of the Hospital in Atlanta Georgia between July and October of 1864, and was promoted to brevet captain on October 6, 1865.

By 1865, he was back home with his mother and siblings. He was 25, born in Herkimer County, NY, and a surgeon. (1865 NY State Census, Herkimer Co., German Flatts, ED 1, Mohawk Village, p. 75, #637).

In January of 1865, Lewis purchased a five acre lot in German Flatts from John and Mary Tisdale. (Herkimer Co. (NY) Deeds 85-229). On 4 August 1870, Lewis Applegate “of the City of New York” and his wife Tillie sold the lot to Solomon Ford. (Herkimer Co. (NY) Deeds 96-2). Lewis signed his name to the 1870 deed as “Lewis Applegate, M.D.”.

In between, Lewis went to medical school at Columbia and graduated in 1866. (“Catalogue of the Governors, Trustees, and Officers and All of the Alumni and Other Graduates of Columbia College 1754-1882” (1882), p. 118).

On 2 June 1868 in New York City, he married Matilda Ross, the daughter of George and Matilda Petterson. "New York, Marriages, 16861980," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F64ZPW6 : accessed 09 May 2013), Lewis Applegate. M.D. and Matilda Ross, 02 Jun 1868.

In 1870, Lewis was living with his wife with George and Eliza Ross in Manhattan. They have a daughter, whose name in the census in illegible, but may be “Louise”. (1870 Census, supra).

Lewis died on 4 December 1870 of hemiplegia. “Catalogue of the Alumni, Officers and Fellows 1807, College of Physicians and Surgeons, Medical Department of Columbia College”, p. 109.

There is an odd story appearing on one website I have been unable to verify anywhere else. Considering the obvious factual errors in the story and the Confederate apologia contained elsewhere on the site, I am suspicious of the particulars. However, it may contain a germ of truth. The story claims a so-called Southern History Museum in Jacksonville Florida is in possession of a “burial flag” from the funeral of Abraham Lincoln. It continues:

Major Lewis Applegate was a surgeon with the 102nd N.Y. Infantry Regiment. The Applegate Flag is dated April 15, 1865, the date of Lincoln's death. Exactly how Major Applegate came into possession of this flag is not known. What we do know is that several documented articles mention that in Philadelphia, one of the flags used during Lincoln's viewing had 37 stars instead of 36.
President Lincoln was the first president to be embalmed. In fact, the fluids were changed daily during the 20 days of his official state funeral. Was Major Applegate one of those who assisted in the embalming of President Lincoln? This we are not certain of but what we do know is that the flag was passed through the family as follows: Louise Applegate Worthington (1890), Maggie R. Worthington (1926), Gloria Worley Conway (1942), Mrs. Barnwell Daley (1977) and the Museum of Southern History (1993). All these individuals with the dates are written on the hoist side of the flag except the final one, the Museum of Southern History.
