John Charles Applegate, born Apr. 5, 1882 in Patoka, IN; died Jan. 13, 1947 in Evansville, Vanderburgh Co., IN. He married on Dec. 4, 1901 to Lueretta Ellen Chaney, born May 23, 1883 in Dale, Pike Co., IN; died May 24, 1961 in Evansville, IN, daughter of Isaac Barr Chaney and Mary Ellen Edwards. At one time, John was employed to play music while men unloaded freight from boats docked on the Ohio River as music was supposed to make the men work faster. John played the guitar, violin, drums, bass and mandolin. He is especially remembered for playing a "mean" Spanish fandango on the guitar. They are buried in Rosehill Cemetery, Newburgh, IN.
