1828-03-02 Letter from Garrett Applegate to James Applegate

To Mr. James Applegate
Living in Alegany County Pensylvania
Elizabeth town Post office

State of Indiana
Harrison County

March 2d 1828

Dear Son

In compliance with your request I take this short method of acquainting you of our circumstances. We are in a reasonable state of health at present.

Your letter dated -th Deer has just come to hand which gave us great satisfaction to heare of your welfare. [A]s for my self I have been lamer in my hip this winter than ever I was in my life. [A]s for any other greavances I believe I have none. I killed between 8 and 9 hundred weight of pork last January beside a small beef in the fall and I expect I have corn sufficient to do me this season. I expect to have 60 weight of dresed flax allso ten head of sheep allso 2 milch cows and from what I have stated above you can judge for your self whether I stand in need of anything more or not.

I have never heard from your country since I was there until I received your letter. We have had a remarkable warm winter and very wett. [T]here was more rain fell here this winter than ever was known. [S]carse one dry day in a weak for three months and no snow worth mentioning and still continues to be so

As for markets they are hardly as good as yours. Wheat is 500 corn and oats 12 1/2 pork 2 cts Whiskey 25 cts by the barrel and by the gallon 50 cts.

All our friends here are well at present but cannot tell how long it will remain so from all circumstances and high watters. [I]t is expected to be very sickly here this summer but we hope it may not be so.

Isaiahs two boys and Wm Applegates boyes have been down the river to Orleans with 2 boats loaded with corn this winter and came back with little or no money. [T]he Orlean Market of late has ruined a grait many of our Sitizens

Allso William Pangburn's son Stephen went down from the state of Ohio and on his way down he drank a large quantity of cold watter being very warm and took sick immediately. [H]e lived untill he reached Byoo Sarah and there died. [T]he rest of our relations as far as we can hear have all returned home well.

You stated that the western part of Pensylvania is in favour of Gen. Jacksons election to the presidency. I will have to state that the majority of this state is in favor of the administration so that we are in direct opposition to yours

One thing more Isaiah sayes he never coveted the old place in his life nor broke the tenth commandment in that respect if he did in any other. [H]e request to heare in your next letter where McMachins gone to

Write me an answer as soon as posible. We are allways glad to heare from you. I add no more for fear of tiring your patience with reading so large a dialogue and am yours with respect untill Death
