RILEY APPLEGATE-The surname Applegate, according to Lower, the best authority on surnames, is from the ancient Saxon word applegarth, which mean an apple orchard, and as many of the old families were engaged in farming, it is interesting to note that this family evidently excelled in the rearing of their apple orchards. The original settlers in this country of this old family were three brothers, John, Jacob, and Bartholomew, all of whom settled in the State of New Jersey, but in various parts of it, one going west, one south, and one east. later descendents of theirs are mentioned in the records of Freehold, a Thomas and Bartholomew being named in 1674. They came from Gravesend, Long Island, and Thomas probably settled and married Johanna Gibbons, a daughter of Richard Gibbons, who was one of the twelve original Monmouth patentees. Thomas died about the beginning of 1699, leaving his widow and six sons: Thomas, John, Daniel, Joseph, Benjamin, and Richard. His will was dated February 1, 1698, and was proved February 29, 1699, his widow, Johanna and her father being the executors. His eldest son, Thomas settled at Perth Amboy, marrying Ann, ----- and their sons were: Thomas, John, James, and Andrew, and their descendents today number many thousands, an early branch having settled in Ocean and Monmouth counties, One branch in Trenton, one in Freehold , and others scattered throughout the country. The well remembered justice of the peace of Toms River Joseph Appleton (?-ED), was of this family, and among the records of the Revolutionary War, in the patriot army are found the names of the following Applegates from Monmouth County: Daniel, John, Bartholomew, Benjamin, Robert, James, Joseph and William.

Riley Applegate was born December 4, 1893, at Island Heights, New Jersey, son of Samuel and Margaret (Johnson) Applegate, his father a carpenter. He was educated at the public schools of Island Heights, and later attended the high school of Toms River, New Jersey. Completing his education, he entered the garage business and has continued in that line ever since, today running a garage in Island Heights, where he has the capacity for storing cars, repairing, carrying supplies, etc., and has a sub-agency for the Buick automobiles. During the war he entered the United States army in 1917, at Toms River, and was sent to, Camp Dix, then to Port Sam Houston, Camp Merritt, New Jersey, and then overseas to St. Longue, France, and was in action at Alsace-Lorraine. Chateau Thierry, Soissons and the Argonne, serving in the motor transport corps. He received his honorable discharge on September 4, 1919, after his service of twenty-three months. On his return he resumed his business affairs, and has met with a constantly growing success.
