Obituary
Daniel W. Applegate, of Plainfield, who up to a year ago lived in this city, died at his home there this morning of pleural pneumonia. He had been ill for five days. He formerly kept a butcher shop here at the corner of New street and Codwise avenue, and also a number of others at different places in this vicinity A year ago he moved to Plainfield, where he kept a butcher shop and a horse exchange stable. He was 53 years of age.
He is survived by his wife and five sons and daughers, William A., of Bound Brook, Clifford L., Daniel W., Jr., Grace Mildred, Elizabeth, all of Plainfield, and Mrs. George Schisler, of Trenton.
The news of Mr. Applegate's death came as a great shock to his friends in this city, as they had not heard that he was ill. He had been enjoying robust health up to the time he became ill a few days ago.
Mr. Applegate some years ago built the large property at the corner of Codwise avenue and New streets, which was one of the larges buildings in that part of the city at the time. He was determined to make a business centre of that corner and for years kept a butcher and produce store there himself, while the adjoining store was occupied by Bissett, the druggist.
Mr. Applegate also did an extensive horse business, bringing carloads of horses to this city and selling them at public and private sale.
