4859	Who is Nathaniel Kerr? "Internet consensus" (for which I can find no direct evidence) is that Nathaniel Kerr is the son of Walter William (or William Walter) Kerr/Carr who married Susannah Applegate (current Vorress No. 5A3A9) on 12 Nov 1812, probably in Allegheny Co., PA (Joseph Beckett, J.P. Marriage List 1792-1815, reproduced from The Elizabeth Herald, 1888, reprinted at . If this is a reliable record of her marriage, then she was born no later than about 1795. This date in the early 1790 fits in nicely with the gap in the known dates of birth for the children of Robert between Joseph b. 1790 and Rebeca b. 1804. Walter Kerr was enumerated in the 1850 Census in East Finley Township. Washington Co., PA. East Finley Twp. is directly north of Richhill Twp., Green Co., so while they are in different counties, they are very close together. In the Census Walter Kerr is 68, a farmer, and born in PA; Watson is 22, a laborer, and born in PA; Barbary (Barbara) is 16, and born in PA; Isaiah is 14, and born in PA; and Walter is 12, and born in PA. [1850 US Census, PA, Washington Co., East Finley Twp., 111/111]. There is no sign of any adult females in the household. That and the age of the youngest child Walter, indicates Walter Sr.'s wife had died between 1840 and 1850. Walter does not seem to have moved by by 1860. He was enumerated in East Finley Twp., Washington Co., PA as Walter "Carr". He was 78, a farmer, born in NJ. 4875	WILLIAM APPLEGATE William Applegate, proprietor of the Hotel Monmouth, Asbury Park, was born in Freehold township, Monmouth county, January 23, 1843. His parents, Mathias and Margaret (Emmons) Applegate, were both natives of Monmouth county, where the paternal ancestors of our subject followed the vocation of farming. The boyhood days of William were passed on his father’s farm. He attended the common school at West Freehold. In 1864 he enlisted as a private in Company E, of the Twenty-eighth New Jersey Volunteer Infantry, and participated in the Battle of Fredricksburg. After being mustered out at the end of the war he went to New York and learned the butcher’s trade. He opened a meat market at Eighth Avenue and Fifty-fourth street, which he conducted successfully for seven or eight years. In 1873 he located in Asbury park and oopened a general provision and butcher business. Fourteen years later he closed out this business and went to Belmar, then known as Ocean Beach, and became proprietor of the Surfr House, now known as the Melrose Inn. After conducting this hotel for two seasons he purchased the Atlantic Hotel in Asbury Park, and after spending some forty thousand dollars in improvements and additions renamed the hotel, calling it Hotel Monmouth. The hotel accommodates about three hundred guests and is open from June to October. It has a large clientage, representing people from all quarters of the United States and Canada. Mr. Applegate has from time to time invested in real estate and owns some choice properity in Asbury Park and vicinity. His winter home is at 509 Sixth avenue. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. In 1867 Mr. Applegate was married to Elmira Hendrickson of Freehold township, Monm,outh county. Mrs. Applegate passed away December 25, 1891. She was the mother of eioght children, all of whom survive her. Mtr. Applegate is a self-made man. He began his business career with no capital excepting energy and ability. 4876	William E. Applegate, liveryman at Toledo, was born in Cedar county, Iowa, August 17, 1847. His parents were Jacob W. and Mary Ann Applegate, natives of Indiana, where the father was reared on a farm. When William was five years of age, his parents came to Tama county, where the father engaged in buying and selling land for a few years, then settled on a farm in Indian Village township, and followed farming until the breaking out of the Rebellion. The father enlisted in Company C, 10th Iowa Infantry and died of smallpox in Washington hospital, at Memphis, Tennessee. The mother afterward married Samuel Jones and is now living in Fort Madison, Lee county, this state. Williamk was reared in Tama county and at the age of ten years hired to A. Richardson and worked on a farm until 1863. That year he enlisted in Company I, 8th Iowa Cavalry, went south to Nashville, and was with General Sherman until the capture of Atlanta. His company was then placed under General Thomas in the campaign against Nashville. Mr. Applegate participated in the following battles: Dalton, Stony Face, Tilton, Resaca, Cassville, Burnt Hickory, Marietta, Newman, Georgia, and Lovejoy Station. He was taken prisoner at Lovejoy Station, but escaped in about three hours, and rejoined the remnant of his Regiment at Kingston, Georgia. The Regiment was re-organized and placed again under the command of General Thomas, participated in the battles of Nashville, Franklin, Shoal Creek and West Point. He wasa mustered out of service at Macon and discharged at Clinton, Iowa. Mr. Applegate then came to Toledo, Tama county, Iowa, and attended school for about bone year; then worked at different occupations until 1876, when he went into partnership with C.F. McGee in the livery business. This partnership continued until August 1?, 1878, when the firm was changed to McGee, Applegate & Ross, which was continued until September, 1880, when McGee withdrew. In November, 1881, Mr. Applegate bought the interest of Ross and has since bgeen the sole proprietor. June 20, 1872, he was married to Miss E.M. Loupee, a native of Michigan, and a daughter of Louis and Phoebe (Brown) Loupee. They have two children living: Lewis, born February 6, 1880 and Edna May, born January 4th, 1883. Freddie died September 11, 1876, aged three and a half years; and Allie died Septyember 29, 1876, aged about two years and Jessie died December 15, 1880, aged three and a half years. 4877	William grew up in the deep south during the Civil War and when he returned with his parents in 1865, he entered Georgetown College where he studied chemistry, pharmacy, and other useful subjects. After his father established the whiskey business in Louisville, he immediately entered into management and upon his father's death, became the sole manager. He owned a distillery near Yelvington, Daviess Co., Ky., was stock holder in numerous corporations; director of banks and insurance and trust companies; a leading member of the Board of Trade of Louisville, Commercial Club of Louisville, was principal stockholder in Churchill Downs in Louisville, owned Oakwood Stock Farm in Lexington, Ky.; and was known as one of the best breeders of thoroughbred horses in Ky. 4879	WILLIAM IRVING APPLEGATE-Among the veterans of the railroad service, William I. Applegate can point to a lifetime association, with the business dating from boyhood. For the past thirty years he has been stationed at Farmingdale, New Jersey, and is yet in the harness. He is a man of high character, highly esteemed by the officials who are in authority over him, and well liked by all who know him. William Irving Applegate was born at Toms River, Ocean county, New Jersey, April 28, 1863, son of William Elmira (Rulon) Applegate; his father was a wheelright when a young man, but later and for many years a member of the United States secret service. The lad, William I., attended Toms River public schools, but after completing grammar school courses, learned telegraphy, while ion railroad employ at seaside. About the year 1890 he was appointed operator at Farmingdale, New Jersey, and there continues thirty years later, and for eighteen of those thirty years acting as agent for the Central Railroad of New Jersey. Mr. Applegate is a Democrat in polotics, a member of the Modern Woodmen of America, and of the Presbyterian church. He married, February 20, 1885, in Farmingdale, Mary Jane Jones, born in Farmingdale, New Jersey, July 28, 1864, daughter of Benjamin and Rebecca (Corlies) Jones, of early Monmouth families. Benjamin Jones was born in Howell Township, Monmouth county; later was in the produce commission business in New York City on Washington street, until his death. Mr and Mrs. Applegate are the parents of two sons and a daughter: 1. Walter Irving Applegate, who was born at Sea Side Park, New Jersey, March 3, 1888, and educated in the public school of Farmingdale. He is an inspector for the Standard Oil Company. He married Dorothy Barnowold. 2. Arthur Rulon Applegate, born in Farmingdale, New Jersey, March 14, 1896, was educated in grammar school and Freehold High school, and served Farmingdale as collector. He married Lillian Conrow, and resides in Farmingdale, and is employed in the First Natioonal Bank of Freehold. He served with the United States army during the War with germany, for eighteen months, in the First Division, Motor Supply Corps, ranking as sergeant. 3.
