She was enumerated as an "idiot" in the 1850 census; her father's will makes special provisions for her care after his death. "[I]t is my will that my executors hereinafter named put all the balance of my personal property at interest and pay the interest yearly to said Ebenezer Applegate and Mary M. Applegate for the maintenance of my said daughter Amelia Applegate, during her natural life and after her death to pay her funeral expenses out of said personal estate" and "I hereby appoint my son Ebenezer Applegate and Mary M. Applegate guardians of my said daughter Amelia Applegate."
