William grew up in the deep south during the Civil War and when he returned with his parents in 1865, he entered Georgetown College where he studied chemistry, pharmacy, and other useful subjects. After his father established the whiskey business in Louisville, he immediately entered into management and upon his father's death, became the sole manager. He owned a distillery near Yelvington, Daviess Co., Ky., was stock holder in numerous corporations; director of banks and insurance and trust companies; a leading member of the Board of Trade of Louisville, Commercial Club of Louisville, was principal stockholder in Churchill Downs in Louisville, owned Oakwood Stock Farm in Lexington, Ky.; and was known as one of the best breeders of thoroughbred horses in Ky. He was politically a Jeffersonian Democrat. The family attended the Methodist Church
