    RICHARD E. APPLEGATE
Richard’s great-great-grandfather, Andrew Applegate was born around 1786. He married Sally Brand on September 20, 1827. Andrew was an early resident of Portsmouth and had a blacksmith shop at Second and Jefferson Street in 1847.
Andrew’s son, who was a great-grandfather of Richard, was also named Richard. He married Lucy Bostwick on February 1, 1860. He was a river boat captain and pilot on the Ohio River at Cincinnati, Ohio.
His son, young Richard’s grandfather, was named Alonzo. He married Hattie Wright January 18, 1885. She was a Cherokee Indian on her mother’s side. Alonzo was a member of the Portsmith Fire Department when they drove horses. One day Alonzo’s own barn burned down because the firemen on duty didn’t know where the fireplug was and he wouldn’t tell them. He thought it was part of their job. He took part in fire races with other local stations. The races were quite popular then. Alonzo was quite a fireman, win or lose.
One of Alonzo’s sons was named Charles. Charles married Julia Hannah, April 28, 1926. They had eight sons and one daughter. He worked at the Wheeling Steel Mill in New Boston. Charles played in a local band, was a local boxer and played on the mill’s softball team.
His son, Richard Eugene Applegate, was born October 31, 1927. He attended the Portsmouth city schools and married Carolyn Hall on February 1, 1963. They have two sons, Richard II, born February 1, 1965, and David Andrew, born April 23, 1967.
Richard E. served in the United States Navy from 1945 to 1951. He was a barber located at Sixth and Offnere Street for 11 years. Richard then became a milk man for Lawson dairy for 10 years. Richard has most recently been a sales representative for the Western and Soputhern Insurance Company for the past seven years. Richard is a veteran of the Korean War. His great-grandfather, Richard, was a Civil war veteran.
In other activities, he was a Red Cross simming instructor for 1955 to 1971 at Dreamland Pool. Richard has been a Scout master of troop 15 at First Christian Church for 30 years. His most memorable memory in Scouting was a 250-mile hike from the Columbia Parkway in Cincinnati to Toledo, Ohio.
Richard’s son, David, is in the Air Force and Richard II is in college. The Applegates reside in Portsmouth.

Richard married Carolyn Hall 01 Feb 1963. [Group Sheet]
