1839-04-21 Letter from Derrick Applegate to James Applegate

April 21st 1839

Dear Brother

[Y]our Letter of March the 30th came safe to hand by Mail which gave us the pleasing inteligence of your health and prosperity in this world and which would be pleasing satisfaction at any and every time to heare.
[Y]our friends in this country in general are well at this time. [Y]ou wrote concerning William Applegates family. [T]hey are all well except the old man who is still insane and no hopes of his ever being any better in this Life. [H]e is very peacable and confines himself at home but somewhat troublesom to his own family.

I now inform you that Asher still continues on the river and is Married to a lady of fortune. [M]y Daughter Hannah and her husband has been to Louisvill and saw his wife she was a widdow with two small children and owns a Large farm in the [A]rkensas state with forty Black slaves and other property in proportion.

[A]s for crops they look prosperous at present and Markets are reasonable good for this country. [W]heat is 87 1/2 cts, corn 37 1/2, oats 37 1/2 per bushel. Money is very uncertain there is a large number of Banks not current here.

I have nothing more to write worth your attention at present but express a desire to heare from you often as this is the only way we can hold any conversation together in our present situation. Adieu at present untill I hear from you again.
